He was born Robert Francis O’Rourke on 26. September 1972 in El Paso, Texas, USA. He is American but of mixed race and Irish/Welsh descent. As a baby, his parents called him “Beto”, a Spanish pet variant for names ending in “-berto”.
Beto O’rourke grew up in El Paso, where he attended Escuela Montessori Del Valle Preschool, Rivera Elementary School, and Mesita Elementary School. After completing his elementary school, he enrolled at El Paso High School. However, he only spent two years there before transferring to Woodberry Forest School in Madison County, Virginia. Growing up, O’rourke was a socially shy and awkward child. However, by frequently accompanying his father to political events, he unconsciously developed his leadership skills and passion for politics.
O’rourke was a bit rough in his teens and belonged to the Dead Cow Cult, a computer hacking group that created tools that aided in hacking computers. A member of the Dead Cow Cult, Beto stole phone services and used his literary talent to write socially unacceptable poetry. As a young adult he was arrested twice. The first was in 1995 for driving into a physical plant with a group of friends, while the second was in 1998 for driving under the influence of people.
After graduating from Woodberry, Beto went on to Columbia University in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Art degree in English Literature in 1995. As a student, Beto was co-captain of the university’s boat rudder crew. He was also a member of Foss, a post-hardcore music band, in which he played bass guitar. Later he belonged to other bands like “Swedes”, “Fragile Gang” and “The Sheeps”.
Business and political career
After his university education, Beto O’rourk immersed himself in the business and invested mainly in real estate. He has also held various positions for various companies, including his mother’s furniture store. However, he got his first full-time job at HW Wilson Publishing Company, where he worked as a proofreader. Although he has a degree in English Literature, Beto’s work typically revolves around computer technology, including software and web design. In 2000, he founded an Internet and software services company in El Paso, which he named Stanton Street Technology Group.

Amy Sanders studied psychology and is a teacher and educator by trade. Among her numerous other ventures, Amy served as President of Beto’s Stanton Street Technology Company as of 2013. However, she gave up the position in 2017 to devote more time to her husband’s political cause. Interestingly, Amy’s father, Bill Sanders, was the one who introduced Beto’s mother to his father, having previously met her.
